Fact – too many businesses still need to wake up and realize that social media is not “one of these Internet fads” that will disappear.

Fact – because of this mindset, too many businesses are potentially missing out on extra business that could mean the difference between staying afloat and going under. So why the problem?

One of the main reasons is that businesses – whether it’s the CEO, top-tier management or otherwise – are looking at social media as an individual medium, much like PR or marketing.

This is where the cracks start to appear. Social media benefits companies the most when it’s used as part of an integrated campaign.

Have a Clear and Defined Goal

What is a Buzz? And how do you create one. Well simply put. A Buzz is a word of mouth or advertising trick and makes people wonder, what’s all the fuse is about. Do you remember when the Terminator first came out? Do you remember the bus benches and the Billboards and commercials showing two red glowing eyes, and “T1” in futuristic letters? “Coming Soon” People started wondering what heck is that?.

Some years ago I had a corner office in a 16 story building, in a 1500 sq foot office space, paying $2,200.00 per month rent, $1,800.00 phone bills and salaries and $2,900.00 dollars in monthly internet advertising and Yellow pages.

I had Great location, a wonderful ocean view and an incredible secretary. As things went on I noticed one thing. As silly as it seemed, no one was coming through the door inquiring what we do, like in some store front spaces where they have a lot of foot traffic.  Most of my clients found us in the phone book or on the internet, and some word of mouth. Most of the business was done by phone. And every now and then we would get a walk –in. But things started to get slow. I mean REAL slow, to the point where every month a struggle.

So one day I was looking out of my Huge Window pondering, and I looked down at all the people and traffic going by. I thought to myself, Huum. I called to my secretary and said look down there, all those people are our potential clients, but they don’t know we exist. She looked at me and flipped her hair and said, Then GO GET’EM and she went back to her desk. That night I started thinking about that statement and the bells went off  like a bomb.

I need to create a buzz to let people know we are here and what we do and how we can help them. So I made a really great 4×6 index card flyer, and had 100 printed. Now some will say this is old school and very expensive and it doesn’t work because people will more than likely throw it on the ground and I will never get seen. Yes and No!

What was expensive was the ridicules rent and phone bill I was paying on top of the salary for my secretary and hardly any money left over from me, and even if they through it down it would be so catchy that some else just might pick it up and look at it.

So I said to myself. “Self where would be the best place to start”. And I said “why don’t you start here”? So I went to the parking lot and put my index card sized flyers on cars in the lot at my office building, then I slid them under the doors in the building. These folk need my services too. Then I went to some of the and lots and did the same. Then I went to some of the hottest lunch spots in the area and spoke to the managers and owners and offered a little something for referrals if they would put my flyers somewhere where they could get some attention.

 I even offer the business owners my business consultant and marketing services free and gave them ad space on my Website.  Well I’ll be, within 2 day the phones started to ring and we ask to caller how they us how they found us or who they were referred by. To my surprise it was from the flyers, the business owners and managers I had offered free services too and a little something for the pocket.

The moral of this story is it doesn’t matter if you are in an office building, or work from home, if people don’t know you’re there, you will just get passed by. Everyone is your potential customer or potential form of word of mouth or buzz creating advertisement. You just need to get up and get out and as my secretary said “GO GET’EM “

Make a nice 4×6 index card size flyer, and always have business cards with you. When you go to a shopping center or somewhere there are a lot of cars, put some it just takes a minute.

If  you talk to a business owner or manager of an establishment, or someone that my be interested in sending you referrals, remember to offer a little something for their time an effort when the deal closes, even if it doesn’t, send the a thank you card for their efforts. That in itself goes a long way!

If you are in a store in line at the market and department store, etc talk to people in front of you or behind you or even the cashier. You never know who is listening to your conversation or who you may be talking too. Everyone know someone that my need your product, service, or opportunity.

However, we’ve noticed a lot of small businesses don’t have a Facebook fan page but are instead using personal profiles for business connections.

We think having a personal profile is great; there’s no better way to stay connected to family and friends online. For a business though, a fan page has tremendous benefits:

1. Separation of Work and Play:

Does your business site link to your personal profile? Be careful, prospective clients probably aren’t interested in seeing photos from last Friday’s happy hour or your old college buddies trash talking about the big game. Without analytic, there’s no way to measure your Facebook presence. With the Facebook Insights for pages, you can see how many and when people are viewing and interacting with your posts. This is great for discovering what types of content your fans prefer. Maybe you personally feel that kitten pictures are adorable, but your fans can’t stand them. With a fan page, you’ll know.

5. Custom Analytics:

The basic Facebook Insights are great for a start, but you can take it to another level by authorizing a third party program like Nutshellmail that gives more detailed data as well as suggestions on when to post your next update based on when your fans are the most active. Maybe you’re on the East Coast but a lot of your fans are on the West Coast, scheduling a post while they are still sleeping could land bigger results.

6. Contests and Promotions:

If you want to do a contest or promotion on Facebook, you have to do it on a Fan Page through the use of a third party app (Facebook Promotions Guidelines). Do you work with other businesses? Your company page can like other brands and even tag them in posts expanding your message to new people.

Chances are good that over the last month or so, you've heard someone talking about Google+, the new social network from Google. The site works similarly to Facebook — there's a news feed composed of status updates and shared content, recommended friends, etc. — but the idea behind Google+ is that you can share content just with specific sets of people (called Circles) instead of publishing it for all to see.

If you're someone who has just gotten the hang of Facebook or Twitter, then we'll bet you're not excited about another social network. So allow us to tell you that as a small business or organization, you need not worry about Google+ just yet. But that doesn't mean you should ignore it completely.

Here are 4 things you should know about this new site:

1. Businesses are not allowed. Yet: Right now Google+ does not allow businesses to sign up for a page, although Google has said it will be bringing a business-friendly version to market later this year. While many business pages have actually been shut down, Ford was one of the first to have a page launch legally.

2. There's been a lot of initial interest. Google+ has been signing up users at a rapid pace in the first few weeks (more than 18 million, according to reports), but it's way too early to tell if people will really care beyond the initial flurry of activity and adopt it enough to make the site a worthwhile long-term investment of time and energy.

3. Facebook still has the lead. One challenge for Google is that Facebook has captured not only early adopters, but most of the entire social media market to get to its 750 million user base. Certainly, a portion of that group is interested in using a different (or additional) network, but most consumers are likely reaching a saturation point where they're comfortable with Facebook and how it works as a social network, and don't need another.

4. It's worth trying. Google+ does have some interesting features — many that are inspired by Facebook, and many others that Facebook will likely incorporate into its own product — so as an interested consumer, we encourage you to check it out and let us know what you think. As a business, you should keep an eye out for Google+ business pages, but for now, don't spend much time worrying about it until the site has real traction.

5 Must Have's For Your Small Business Website

1. Contact details.

It might seem a bit obvious this one, but you'd be surprised how many people forget to add their contact details. Not only must you have your contact details–at a minimum your address, phone number and email address–but you must make those details easy to find. Don't hide them away in the footer. Make the "contact us" page one of the most obvious ones. Because having a website boils down to just one thing: making more sales. And if your website visitors have a hard time getting in touch, then they're not going to buy from you.

2. Map (If you have a Brick & Mortar/Store Front Location)

A bit less obvious, but a must-have that can make a real difference to the number of leads your website generates. The nature of the Internet is anonymous–we're all dealing with companies and individuals through a computer screen. And because of this, the Internet is a scammer's paradise–it only takes a few minutes to build a website and pretend to be a company. So having a map of where you are adds a real reassurance to your website visitors.
